Description

Transformative Inspirations Workshop

Facilitated by Mercedes Loving Manley

Through studying the works of 3 filmmakers, we will learn the role of community and storytelling for Black Queer and Trans people. With a close look at themes, techniques and traditions utilized by directors Anne Lescot, Laurence Magloire, Marlon Riggs, and Baillie Walsh, we will be able to explore the power of community globally and nationally.

April 7 | Part One: Transformative Inspirations
We will examine the intersectionality of Blackness and Queerness and Transness in storytelling, focusing on themes of femininity, siblinghood, spirituality, and dialect. These themes will be explored as they are depicted in 'Of Men and Gods', 'Mirror, Mirror' and Marlon Riggs’ 'Tongues Untied'. We will study some of the techniques and traditions each director utilizes in order to convey these themes, including Theater, Slow motion, handheld cam operation, close-up, and intimate interview.

The Ujima Arts & Cultural Organizing Team meets every 1st Wednesday of the month. Join us!

Through participation in our Arts and Cultural Organizing member-led group, local community members will have an opportunity to maximize their creative potential through a quarterly learning rotation and self-determined syllabus that will invite creative community members, artists, and scholars to present their work, inspirations, and technical skills to inspire creative community experimentation and artistic development within the Ujima ecosystem and beyond.
