Choreographing Resistance: An Embodied Exploration of Dance, Healing & Music:
This summer, we will celebrate our music and dance cultures such as House and Disco, Afrobeats, Soca, Ball Room, and more. Each free workshop will include a sharing of our histories followed by a dance session, to revel in a powerfully Black embodied learning experience.
Workshop Description:
In this workshop, our facilitator Bambu will teach us the basics of Capoeira. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that originally developed in the slave communities of Brazil as a form of resistance against oppression. Over the last two centuries, capoeira has spread across the globe, incorporating elements from a variety of other arts along the way. Contemporary capoeira takes elements of music, dance, acrobatics, and martial arts and blends them all together into a beautiful practice that helps promote growth through community.
Facilitator Bio:
Bambu has been training and teaching capoeira in the Boston area for over a decade, beginning with Mestre Chuvisco in the early 2000s. In 2022 he received the title of Instrutor and began teaching classes in the Roxbury/JP area. His primary interests are sharing the passion and energy that he finds in capoeira with others and building a strong community here in Boston.
